Football has been in existence in the Colac region from late last century, and Colac teams have participated in various football competitions since then.

The Colac Football Club entered the Hampden League in 1949 with Jack Cassin as coach and an enthusiastic band of Colac and district supporters.

In 1961 Coragulac entered the Hampden League from the Polwarth League.

Colac’s early impact in this league was evidenced by three premierships in 1950, 52 and 53.

In 1962 the Central Reserve became the home of the Colac Tigers.

Over the ensuing years Colac and Coragulac contested many Lakeside Derbies and in 1980 the two clubs joined forces as the Colac/Coragulac Football Club. These years were very productive as from 1980 – 1985 the Colac/Coragulac combination won four premierships in six years. Prior to the 1986 season a decision was voted on to change the name back to the Colac Football Club.

Netball was introduced in the Hampden League in 1987 and Colac quickly became a force to be reckoned with. The netball component to the Colac Football Club was an outstanding success and when discussions arose about joining the Geelong Football League, the club insisted on waiting until the GFL included a netball competition.

Premiership glory was again achieved in 1993 and prior to the 2001 season following much discussion and debate the Colac Football Netball Club  voted to join the GFL now known as the Geelong Football Netball League.

Colac Tigers can be very proud of their history in both strong country football competitions. Colac has nurtured and developed many successful sportsman and woman who have excelled at higher levels.

In such a brief overview it is impossible to mention individuals, so for those interested an important resource is the publication ’50 Seasons in Tigerland,’ the history of the Colac Football Club 1949-1998 by David Turner.
